South India Backwaters & BeachA short, low-key South India trip built around rest rather than sightseeing — a backwater houseboat night followed by three nights on Kerala's southern beaches.
Not every South India trip needs to be a sightseeing circuit. This is the version for travellers who want the backwaters experience plus genuine beach downtime, without a long itinerary attached.
Transfer to Alappuzha and board your private houseboat for an overnight backwater cruise — Kerala's signature experience. Meals are cooked fresh on board as you drift through a landscape of palm-lined canals, paddy fields and small waterside villages.
A slower second day on or around the backwaters, either extending the houseboat cruise or transferring to a canal-side resort for canoe trips through the narrower waterways that houseboats can't reach.
Drive from Alappuzha to Kovalam (approx. 4–4.5 hours).
Free days at Kovalam for swimming, optional Ayurvedic treatments (Kerala's traditional wellness system), or a half-day excursion to nearby Poovar for a quieter backwater-meets-beach setting.
A further free day on Kovalam's beaches, with an optional sunset walk along the lighthouse promenade or additional Ayurvedic treatment sessions for those following a longer course.
